Timesheet & Resource Economics

Know exactly where innovation spend goes — by project, team, or individual.

01

Why Resource Economics Matters for Innovation

People are the most expensive resource in any innovation organization. Yet most R&D leaders have only a vague sense of where their team's time actually goes. Without structured time tracking linked to projects, the question 'how much did this product development cost us?' is answerable only with rough estimates and allocations — not actual data. And if you can't answer that question accurately, you can't calculate innovation ROI, you can't benchmark project economics, and you can't make informed resource allocation decisions.

The problem compounds at scale. When an organization runs 30 concurrent projects across 5 business units, the question becomes: 'are we allocating our best people to our highest-priority projects, or are they stuck maintaining legacy products?' Without time data linked to project priority, that question is unanswerable.

Budget overruns in innovation projects are rarely caused by a single large expense. They're caused by the steady accumulation of untracked time — the meeting that should have been an email, the rework caused by unclear requirements, the parallel effort on two teams that didn't know the other was working on the same problem. Making that time visible is the first step to managing it.

02

How Athena Optimizes Resource Tracking

Athena's Timesheet module lets team members log hours against specific project tasks — with the same task hierarchy they already work within. No separate timesheet system, no re-entering project codes, no cognitive overhead of mapping 'what I did' to 'what bucket does finance need this in.' The tasks are the buckets.

Managers approve timesheets through the same workflow engine that handles every other approval in the platform. Exception reports flag anomalies — team members who haven't logged time, projects with hours exceeding budget, individuals with unsustainable allocation percentages. These aren't annual surprises; they're weekly signals.

Because time data lives in the same system as project data, budget-vs-actual reports generate themselves. The Man-Hour Budget Consumption Report shows, for any project or portfolio, how much of the allocated budget has been consumed and by whom — updated in real time, not reconstructed quarterly from payroll data and allocation assumptions.

What You Get

Calendar-based time entry against project tasks
Manager approval workflow with exception flagging
Man-Hour Budget Consumption Report — live, per-project
Monthly Man-Hours Report across the organization
Exception Report — missing entries, over-allocation, budget overruns
Timesheet log with full history and audit trail
Integration with project budgets — actuals vs. planned
Multi-project time allocation visibility for resource planning
04

How It Connects

Hours logged against Tasks feed the Project's expenditure tracking. Budget consumption reports roll up to Executive Dashboards. Timesheet approvals use the shared Workflow Engine.
