Surface every project risk, score it, own it, and close it — before it becomes a problem.
A project that runs from idea to plant spans months or years, many stages, and many teams — and risk accumulates at every handoff. A raw material that may not scale, a supplier who may slip, a regulatory change on the horizon, a stability result that hasn't come back yet. These risks are almost always known to someone on the team. The failure is rarely ignorance — it's that the knowledge lives in one person's head, surfaces in a meeting, and then evaporates until it becomes a crisis.
Risk weakens quietly and fails loudly. A vendor delay starts as a mild concern in a status call and, months later, becomes the reason a launch window is missed. Without a structured register, there's no shared list of what could go wrong, no agreed measure of how serious each item is, no named owner, and no record of what was done about it. Post-mortems then discover that the risk was flagged all along — just never tracked.
Management's problem is worse still: with risks scattered across dozens of project spreadsheets, leadership has no way to see, across the whole portfolio, which risks are most severe, which projects are most exposed, or whether the organization is closing risks faster than it creates them. Capital and attention go to whoever escalates loudest, not to the highest-impact exposure.
Athena gives every project a standard risk register built into its workspace. A manager or contributor logs a risk against the project — and, where relevant, a specific stage — with a cause, category, response strategy, mitigation plan, and named owner. Each risk is scored on the classic 5×5 matrix (likelihood × impact), which yields a score and a Low/Medium/High/Critical rating automatically, so severity is measured consistently rather than argued case by case.
Risks are tracked through a clear lifecycle — Open, In Progress, Monitoring, Mitigated, Closed — with closure notes and dates captured as the risk is resolved. Because the register lives inside the project record, the same access model governs it: contributors of a stage can raise the risks they see, while observers get read-only visibility. Nothing lives in a side spreadsheet.
Above the individual projects, a central Risk Register dashboard rolls everything up for management: a 5×5 heat-map showing where open risks cluster, breakdowns by rating and category, a ranked list of the most exposed projects, and a raised-vs-mitigated trend over time — scoped so each viewer sees only the projects they have access to. Leadership can finally focus attention on the highest-impact items and see, month over month, whether risk is being retired or accumulating.
The Risk Register lives inside the Project workspace and shares its access control, stages, and team. Risk severity informs stage-gate decisions in the Workflow & Approval Engine, and the central risk dashboard sits alongside the Executive Dashboards as a portfolio-level view for leadership.
