Techno-Economic Engine

Turn hand-typed cost targets into a computed, scale-aware model of cost per kilogram.

01

Why a Techno-Economic Engine Matters for Innovation

The numbers that decide whether a product goes to plant — raw-material cost, yield, cost per kilogram, margin — are, in most organizations, typed into a dashboard by hand. They are targets, not calculations. The moment the route changes, the scale changes, or a raw-material price moves, the model is stale, and nobody has the time to rebuild the spreadsheet that produced it.

This matters because scale-up is precisely when the economics change most. A yield that looked fine at bench scale erodes at pilot; a solvent that was cheap in grams is a major line item in tonnes. If the cost model can't be recomputed as the process evolves, the go/no-go decision is made on numbers that no longer describe reality.

A computed techno-economic model — sourced from the project's real bill of materials, stoichiometry, and yields — turns cost from an annual guess into a living decision tool that updates as the process and scale change.

How Athena Optimizes Techno-Economics

Athena computes a scale-aware cost model from the project's own data. Costing Sheet and Mass Balance widgets, placed on any experiment, recipe, or batch template, capture the bill of materials, quantities, and rates inline — and compute line costs, total cost, and cost per output unit in real time, revising as each experiment does.

At the project level, the Techno-Economic view rolls these up into a computed VOC/RMC/TSP picture that recalculates as the underlying costing sheets and batch yields change — replacing the manually-entered targets with numbers that trace back to their source.

Because the cost model reads the same batches, recipes, and material data as the rest of the platform, it stays honest: change a charge quantity on a batch, and the cost per kilogram moves with it — no re-keying, no parallel spreadsheet.

What You Get

Inline Costing Sheet / BOM widget — materials, quantities, rates → line and total cost
Mass Balance widget — inputs vs. outputs with closure % against a tolerance
Computed cost per output unit (cost/kg), revised as experiments and batches change
Scale-aware project cost model replacing hand-typed VOC/RMC/TSP targets
Sourced from real project BOM, yields, and batch data — fully traceable
Drops onto any experiment, recipe, or MFR template

How It Connects

The Techno-Economic Engine reads BOM and yield data from Batches and recipe templates, and its widgets are built with the Template Designer. Its computed metrics feed the project's targets and Executive Dashboards.
